P.O.W.ER Read: A Mastery of Monsters by Liselle Sambury
+ My Annotated Thoughts (An unofficial new Substack series?)
Perfect for fans of Immortal Dark and Their Vicious Games with a nice twist of looming near-dystopian feels, I have to say this is one of my new favorites in the dark academia genre. Its lore is fresh and resonant with so much commentary to unpack. the characters are raw and realistic. The overall world building is rich in story, enough that I can see this being at least a trilogy.
This one hits just about every mark on the POWER scale. Personality, originality, It’s an emotional rollercoaster, touching on so many relatable topics like identity, societal pressure, family dynamics, self image and so much more. A Mastery of Monsters is dark academia gold. I devoured the e-arc, but I just got the print book and I’m thinking of doing a more in depth, annotated read and review because I think this book really deserves a deeper analysis and appreciation. And that’s exactly what I’m going to do (in between juggling a few other anticipated reads 😆).
Annotated reading is a great way to slow down and savor a story. It’s also one of my favorite ways to unwind after a hectic day. I’d love to share some of my anotated insights with you, if you’re interested in a deeper review and discussion. Read A Mastery of Monsters with me this month, or stay tuned for weekly posts updating you on my Annotated Thoughts. We’ll explore our favorite lines, the world building, the characters, important themes and other elements that make this book a solid P.O.W.ER read.
Look for a week 1 wrap up this weekend.
